by: Tom DiCamillo

Central Arizona College’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program is offering a series of summer camps to students currently entering or currently enrolled in high school.

Students will benefit from learning more about different majors and careers in these fields while participating in fun activities with their peers.

Students may attend each camp at no cost and lunch is included. There is a limit of 24 seats and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. A CAC STEM adviser will be available during the STEM Summer Camps.

The Enrollment and Talent Release Forms are available for download at www.centralaz.edu/stem.

STEM Chemistry Camp will be held June 11-14 from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Students will be exposed to the exciting world and possibilities of science. Daily themes will include activities involving polymers, gases, reactions, metals, and acids and bases in order to interest more students in, and better prepare them for, careers in science.

STEM Biology Camp will be held June 18-21 from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Students will learn basic lab skills (such as the use of microscopes) as well as perform two DNA technology labs. They will learn how technologists use bacteria to produce human enzymes such as insulin, as well as perform a DNA profile on five (5) suspects and DNA taken from a crime scene. Students will experience a real-world value to the concepts learned in biology.

STEM Robotics Camp will be held June 25-26 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Student will be constructing and programming a FIRST robot. A hands-on introduction to robotics and FIRST competition will be provided.
