Bullying Needs to Stop

by: Tisha Castillo

On October 12th, a very brave Ft Worth City Councilman named Joel Burns, used his time to address a very important issue.  An issue that is killing our children.  This video is being aired on CNN and was originally released on THE LAST WORD on MSNBC.

Obviously bullying has been around forever.  People of all ages and for all types of reasons have either been bullied or have been the one doing the bullying.  With social networking, the media and so many additional channels available bullying can go viral in a matter of minutes.  Its effect is devastating.

There are children in and around San Tan Valley experiencing bullying on a daily basis. We must come together as a community and put an end to this.  When a child tells you that they are being bullied - LISTEN.  If you are being bullied - SPEAK UP.  If you witness someone being bullied - SAY SOMETHING.  Let us know so that we can work together to stop this.

I encourage everyone to please take a few minutes and watch this video.  Grab your children and have them sit with you and watch it.

Whether you are bullied because of your religious affiliation, ethnicity or sexual preference, or because you have curly hair or can't jump as high as some or maybe even because you can get your math work done before anyone else - don't quit! Don't give up!  Look for support, share your experiences with those that you can trust - tell someone and BELIEVE you are here for a reason.   As City Councilman Joel Burns said - keep living - it will get better - you will have a lifetime of good memories - just allow yourself the chance to be here to make them.

Someone who prefers to fight for you, not against you...

I live in a beautiful community known as San Tan Valley.   I believe our elected officials should be held accountable & I have a history of calling them out when needed.  I am a "glass is half full" kind of girl and I love it.  I was honored to receive the 2009 San Tan Area Volunteer of the Year award and just recently was awarded the ACE Jack Camper Scholarship to attend Winter Institute, sponsored by the US Chamber of Commerce.

My husband and I own an IT company, MyBizNow.com, which provides a wide range of products and services to business of all sizes.  We provide graphic design, website development/design, hosting, ecommerce, printing, computer repair and maintenance and more.  We were the 2009 San Tan Area Business of the Year and are proud members of San Tan Leads, ASBA, HREP and the San Tan Valley Chamber. Check out our website for more information.

I was a board member of the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce from 2007-2009 and have been the President/CEO of the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce since 2010.  We have made amazing progress for both our community and our chamber this past year and surpassed our goals for 2011.  Definitely looking forward to what 2012 will bring.

Some other organizations I am or have been proudly affiliated with:

  • One of the founding CORE members of GSTAC, the Greater San Tan Area Coalition, an organization that was created to bring our area together with one voice so that this community could become proactive with its future.
  • Block Watch Coordinator for the Johnson Ranch Community and also one of the founding members of the Greater San Tan Area Community Block Watch Association.
  • Co-chair for the Tech 4 Kids committee in 2008, the committee pushed to get the override passed to allow FUSD #1 to bring tech into our schools. As a result, the first high school in 94 years to be built in the Florence Unified School District, is a 100% tech school, the first in the state of Arizona!
  • Founded the first Special Olympics group in the San Tan Area, known as the San Tan Bumblebees! Go Bumblebees!
  • Through MyBizNow Gives Back, we were able to donate over $11,000 in cash and gift cards to the athletic and art departments at Poston Butte High School, exceeding our goal of $10,000, through the KIDS FIRST golf tournament and community event which was held Saturday, September 12th, 2009.
  • In 2010, my husband and I created this website - SanTanValley.com, which has become the #1 most visited website in San Tan Valley, AZ - thanks to all of you. It is a FREE resource for anyone interested in learning more about San Tan Valley. It includes news, events, classifieds, homes, pets, businesses and more. Check it out when you can and be sure to like our facebook page.

Although I am very active in our community, please know that when I post here, I will be posting as me, Tisha Castillo.  My posts will not represent any of the organizations that I proudly am a part of, but simply my views as a resident of the area.  I hope you enjoy what I share and that you'll come back often and share your thoughts.
