Barbara Kelly for County Recorder

by: Barb Njos, Apache Junction

Barbara Kelly has worked in the recorder’s office for 34 years, in all areas. Before she took early retirement in order to run for the top job, she was the deputy recorder.

As well as knowing every facet of the department, she was part of the modernization and technical upgrades that brought the office into the 21st century, and oversaw the population explosion in the county. She has received specialized training in election law and procedures and has been sent out to other counties to help with training and reorganization. In other words, she is the natural replacement for the retiring county recorder, and will be able to move into the position with no disruption in operations.

Her opponent has no experience with voter registration, early voting, or the process of recording and storing our vital documents. She has said that she managed an office, and that one office is just like any other. This is not only untrue, but dangerous. The documents that the office is responsible for are crucial to most of us at one time or another — they include not only title documents but also things like bankruptcy, partnership, levies, franchising, mortgage, contracts and death certificates. And of course, the all-important voter registration files. All of this is far too important to be subjected to “on-the-job training.” There is simply no reason to replace a knowledgeable, experienced person with someone who quite literally knows nothing. This is a nonpolitical, administrative position and should go to the qualified candidate, and that is unquestionably Barbara Kelly.
