Arizona Hoodie March for Trayvon Martin

Over two thousand people marched through Downtown Phoenix in protest of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin last month in Sanford, Florida. Event organizers were surprised by the large turnout.

Jenni Troy, who put together a Facebook event page along with two of her friends, Natalie and Elizabeth Mason, put the announcement out only three prior to the march.

Reverend Tillman spoke at the beginning. "I am very pleased to see the diversity that's here today," he said. "This is not about black or white. This is about a young man wearing a hoodie on his way back to meet with his family," he exclaimed as he pulled a black hoodie over the top of his head. He continued, "I am wearing this hoodie, although the temperature is hot. But this is to say we will wear this until justice is done."

"God is not pleased with what is going on right now," Reverend Tillman said, "We are here in Phoenix and although someone said 'But that happened in Florida.' What happened in Florida could have happened here."

Zimmerman condemned the police department of Sanford for not doing a good job with the investigation. He concluded, "We are going to march, we will do anything possible to let the justice system know, 'Do Your Job!'"

March participants observed a moment of silence and proceeded to peacefully march about a mile from Civic Space Park to Phoenix City Hall and back. After they returned to the park, a candlelight vigil was held in memory of Trayvon.

Trayvon was shot by neighborhood watch resident George Zimmerman on February 26th as he was walking home afer purchasing Skittles candy and iced tea at a local convenience store. Sanford police have allegedly bungled the investigation into the shooting and now the State of Florida is looking into the matter.

A grand jury is scheduled for April 10th to decide whether to charge George Zimmerman with murder. A civil lawsuit may also be filed against Zimmerman by the family of the young boy (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/03/24/149310730/family-lawyer-sees-state-charges-against-trayvon-martins-killer).

I have been a resident of San Tan Valley since 2005. I am a web application developer for a company in Mesa. I spend some of my free time as a political freelance photojournalist and I also volunteer with an Arizona search and rescue organization.

I have enjoyed seeing the Queen Creek and San Tan Valley area grow and mature over the past seven years. In spite of some of the challenges facing the area, I enjoy living here and am optimistic that the economy and development of San Tan Valley will continue to improve. I enjoy the mixture of the rural atmosphere, the wilderness feel of the San Tan Mountain range, the open desert, and the proximity to many amenities provided by the city.

I look forward to seeing all of the positive things that Arizona will continue to provide and will continue to work hard to ensure that all people are made to feel welcome in this state. And no, I am not running for office but I think I will save that statement for later in case I ever do. :)
